🥾 Hike from Acquaseria to San Martino – Autumn Calm over Lake Como

Updated: Jan 25

Some hikes stay in your memory not because of the kilometers, but because of the moments along the way. Our tour from Acquaseria to San Martino, starting right from our holiday apartment, was exactly that kind of experience.

We visited Lake Como in October – a time we’ve come to love the most. The high season was over, it was pleasantly quiet, the air was clear, and the light soft. Perfect conditions for a hike above the lake.

Our inspiration came from a Komoot route that circles the Monti di Carcente. We adapted it for ourselves and started directly from Acquaseria – no car needed (click here).

🌄 Starting in Acquaseria – quiet, autumnal, relaxed

Acquaseria showed its relaxed side in October. Almost no crowds, empty streets, just a few locals. The trail starts right in town and first passes through the outskirts before slowly climbing uphill.

Soon, you leave the lake behind. The path winds through small forest sections, past old walls, and along narrow trails – nothing spectacular, but exactly that understated beauty that makes it so charming. Further we met this little cuite!

🪵 Arriving in San Martino – and an unexpected invitation

When we reached San Martino, we were rewarded not only with an amazing view but also with an encounter we hadn’t expected.

A few construction workers were renovating a house with an absolutely fantastic view over Lake Como. When they saw us, we started talking – and in typical Italian fashion, it didn’t stop at a few words. We were immediately invited to come closer and enjoy the view from the terrace.

We stood there, laughed a lot, admired the panorama, and just had a really fun, heartfelt time. One of those moments you can’t plan, but that suddenly makes a hike very special.

🧺 Picnic with a view – San Martino all to ourselves

After this little highlight, we found a quiet spot in San Martino – slightly off the path, with an unobstructed view of the lake and mountains. We unpacked our picnic, sat down, and simply enjoyed the silence.

In October, almost no one was around. No noise, no hustle – just the view, autumn air, and the feeling of being exactly in the right place.

Recommended Stop for Summer: Locanda San Martino

In San Martino itself, there is the Locanda San Martino, which is often recommended in the summer. When we visited, it was closed, but it’s said to be a great spot to stop after the hike.

For the warmer months, definitely a tip we’ve kept in mind.

Continuing to Treccione 🏞️

Since we didn’t want to be back too late, we continued from San Martino to Treccione. This section is short and easy.

Treccione felt almost deserted in October. A small mountain village, very quiet, with beautiful views of the lake. It was precisely this calm that made the village so appealing to us.

Descent back to Acquaseria ⛰️

From Treccione, we then headed downhill back to Acquaseria. The descent is easy to walk and offers occasional glimpses of Lake Como until you finally reach the village again. For this round, we were on the trail for about 3½ hours, including breaks. The route is very doable and can be easily extended if you have more time or want extra elevation.

A peaceful hike without major highlights, but with lovely views, very little traffic, and the convenience of starting right from your accommodation. Especially in October, a very enjoyable tour.

The perfect ending 🌊✨

After a peaceful hike through autumnal villages and quiet trails, the absolute highlight is letting your feet dangle into the cool, refreshing waters of Lake Como. There’s something so simple and satisfying about feeling the lake’s crisp touch after a few hours of walking – a small reward that makes the day feel complete. Calm, scenic, and just a little bit magical, it’s the perfect way to round off the adventure.
