On the Trail of James Bond at Lake Como

Updated: Mar 5

A gate opens. A black limousine slowly drives through. The sun hangs low, its light bathing the water and mountains in warm gold. Against this backdrop, Villa Gaeta rises—silent and monumental, almost otherworldly—then cut.

An aerial shot reveals the lake and the villa from a bird’s-eye view: calm, expansive, timeless.

This final scene from Casino Royale is one of the most iconic moments in the entire James Bond series. A brief instant of tense silence, a swift shot — the limousine driver collapses, and Bond’s adversary, Mr. White, is left wounded.

Then comes the line everyone knows: “The name is Bond. James Bond.”

This scene was filmed at Villa Gaeta, right here in Acquaseria — a place on Lake Como that, to this day, has lost none of its mysterious elegance.

It was precisely this unique atmosphere that likely convinced the filmmakers of Casino Royale to choose Acquaseria as the setting for the finale of what we believe is one of the very best James Bond films.

Anyone spending their holiday here experiences Lake Como not just as a travel destination, but as a cinematic backdrop where light, landscape, and history blend together in a truly unique way.

Villa Gaeta is located between Acquaseria and Menaggio, directly on the shores of Lake Como.

What appears in the film as a distant, almost unreachable setting is, in reality, practically right on our doorstep.

To reach Villa Gaeta, you follow a narrow path toward Menaggio that runs directly along the water’s edge. Whether for a relaxed stroll or an easy bike ride, in less than ten minutes the villa suddenly appears before you.

We especially love this route in the early morning, when we cycle to Menaggio to pick up fresh bread rolls — the lake still calm, the light soft, and the villa quietly watching over it all.

For guests of Vespa Azzurra, that means the famous James Bond film location isn’t just a photo opportunity — it’s simply part of everyday holiday life.

Pretty cool, right?

But anyone who believes that Villa Gaeta is the only James Bond filming location on Lake Como would be mistaken. It was only the beginning.

Just a few kilometers away, another place awaits — one that has written its own chapter of film history.

Villa del Balbianello – Bond’s Retreat on Lake Como

Villa del Balbianello sits on a narrow peninsula, surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens and offering uninterrupted views across Lake Como. It is considered one of the most impressive villas in all of northern Italy.

In Casino Royale, it serves as James Bond’s retreat — a place of calm after the dramatic events in Montenegro.

The atmosphere here is entirely different from that of Villa Gaeta: brighter, more open, almost meditative. Instead of dark tension, the scene is defined by light, space, and elegance. This very contrast is what makes the villa such a remarkable film location — and not only for James Bond.

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones was also filmed here, further highlighting the villa’s almost fairytale-like presence.

Villa del Balbianello is located near Lenno, around 12 kilometers south of our holiday apartment. For parking, we recommend the following car park: 👉https://maps.app.goo.gl/f8Bp3cCTTNgphjjd6

From there, the villa can be reached either on foot via a panoramic path or, quite stylishly, by boat. Especially from the water, the villa appears impressive and almost surreal.

Visit to Villa del Balbianello – Tickets & Tips

Villa del Balbianello can be visited regularly. Tickets for touring the villa and its gardens can be purchased online: 👉 https://ticket.fondoambiente.it/events/villa-del-balbianello/villa-del-balbianello

Especially during the summer months, we strongly recommend booking tickets one or two days in advance. Visitor numbers are limited, and it often happens that no tickets are available on site. Booking ahead allows you to plan your visit in a relaxed way.

During our visit, we chose to reach Villa del Balbianello on foot. The path along the lake is scenically beautiful, constantly opening up new views of the water and the surrounding mountains. As you stroll leisurely toward the villa, you can watch life unfold on the lake: boats — often with strikingly well-dressed passengers — depart from the harbor and make their way to the villa as well. A calm, slightly surreal spectacle that perfectly complements the unique atmosphere of this place.

Upon arriving at Villa del Balbianello, the entire setting feels like one grand photographic motif. We have rarely experienced a place maintained with such meticulous care as the villa itself and its gardens. Every path, every terrace, and every sightline seems thoughtfully composed and perfectly staged — yet without ever feeling artificial.

The interior of the villa tells just as much about the history of this remarkable place. The rooms are furnished with historic furniture, valuable art objects, and a collection of books, maps, and travel memorabilia. Particularly influential was its last private owner, Guido Monzino — an Italian explorer and entrepreneur. It quickly becomes clear: a deep passion for expeditions, distant lands — and, evidently, considerable wealth.

One highlight inside is the library overlooking the lake — a quiet, almost contemplative space that perfectly connects the interior with the world outside. Large windows open toward the water, allowing light and landscape to become part of the room itself.

The villa’s gardens are at least equally impressive. Carefully designed terraces, precisely trimmed hedges, and ever-changing sightlines guide the eye across Lake Como.

Particularly famous are the two iconic plane-tree arcades, which resemble a natural gateway and rank among the most photographed motifs in the region. Despite their meticulous maintenance, the gardens never feel rigid — instead, they give the impression of a perfectly composed interplay between nature and architecture.

Alternatively, you can take the way back via the Greenway del Lago di Como through the forest. The path is pleasantly shaded, peaceful, and offers a lovely contrast to the open lakeside promenade. Especially on warm days, it’s a great alternative.

On our way back, we let the excursion wind down in a relaxed way and treated ourselves to a cappuccino at the harbor. After all the impressions, views, and stories, it felt like the perfect moment to simply sit there, gaze out over the lake, and let the experience sink in.

For a visit to Villa del Balbianello, we recommend allowing around two hours in total. This gives you enough time to explore both the gardens and the villa at a relaxed pace and to fully enjoy the special atmosphere of this place without feeling rushed.

After a day filled with impressions, it becomes easy to understand why the filmmakers chose Lake Como as their backdrop. Anyone who has experienced these locations in person will suddenly see Casino Royale with entirely different eyes — and perhaps the perfect way to end the day is by watching the film again in the evening. Because then, it’s no longer just great cinema, but also a piece of lived memory.
