From our cozy holiday apartment in Acquaseria, we set off on a day trip to the vibrant metropolis of Milan.
Getting to Milan 🚗
The drive by car takes about 1½ hours, but the journey itself is already an experience. The route along the small roads by Lake Como is especially beautiful, passing charming villages, shimmering water, and mountains in the background. A true taste of Italy, even before reaching the city. We even drove past the Grand Hotel Tremezzo along the way!
💡 Alternative travel option:
If you prefer to leave the car behind, you can choose a more scenic route: take the ferry from Menaggio to Varenna and then continue by train to Milan. This option didn’t work for us, as we were attending the Inter vs. Cremonese match in the evening and wouldn’t have made it back in time for the last ferry. However, for anyone heading back earlier, the ferry-and-train combination is a wonderful and relaxed alternative, offering beautiful views of Lake Como along the way.
Parking & Metro 🅿️
Since we had tickets for the match in the evening, we parked right here. From this parking spot, it’s easy to reach the city center by metro, which made sightseeing during the day relaxed and straightforward. It was also perfect for getting back to the car quickly after the game.
Sightseeing in Mailand 🏛️
We took the metro straight to the Duomo (Duomo di Milano). Even from the outside, the cathedral is incredibly impressive, and the square in front of it has a very special atmosphere. From there, we continued on foot to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The architecture is simply stunning, and a walk through the Galleria is an absolute must when visiting Milan.
There, we treated ourselves to a delicious gelato and watched the lively scene around us. The area around the Duomo and the Galleria is absolutely worth seeing, though it’s also very busy and touristy – which is part of the experience, but can feel a bit hectic after a while.
Lunch in the Navigli district 🍕🛍️
That’s why we decided to head to the Navigli district for lunch. With its canals, it feels a bit like Venice and offers a much more relaxed atmosphere compared to the busy city center.
We had lunch at a pizzeria and shared a pizza – delicious and just right for midday. Afterwards, we strolled through the neighborhood, browsed the small shops, and did a bit of shopping before slowly making our way toward the stadium.
Evening at the Stadium ⚽
In the evening, the highlight for football fans awaited: the Inter vs. Cremonese match. Inter won 4:1 – the atmosphere in the stadium was amazing, and the game had plenty to offer. Football is treated almost like a religion in Italy, and you can feel it nowhere more clearly than here in the stadium. When Di Marco scored, we even got lucky and managed to capture it on video.
A hot dog and a cold beer perfectly rounded off the stadium experience.
A particularly cool moment was when Jamie Vardy was substituted in. We hadn’t realized that he now plays for Cremonese – most of us still mainly associate him with the Premier League. All the more exciting to see him live on the pitch here in Italy!
As we walked back to the car after the game, it suddenly started pouring rain, and we got soaking wet. Still (or maybe because of it), it was pretty funny. By the time we finally got into the car, we were tired and exhausted – but just happy, because it had been a truly wonderful day.
